That’s it! It is done! The final piece of Mazda’s SKYACTIV and KODO design puzzle has fallen into place.

Styling wise, the new CX-9 does not look that different from the 1st generation (9 years in the making) vehicle. The fact of the matter is that the 2nd gen large CUV is 1.2” (30mm) shorter but with a 2.2” (55mm) longer wheelbase. The most telling aspect of this are the larger rear doors. Overhangs have shrunk as well (2.3” (59mm) front and 1” (25mm) rear). The final result is the hefty and muscular vehicle you see in the picture gallery.

What you can’t in the gallery is the CX-9’s newfound weight loss. To put specifically, thanks to new lightweight materials and smarter engineering, the new FWD CX-9 is198 lbs. (90 kg) lighter while the AWD version is approximately 287 lbs. (130 kg). This has allowed Mazda to add 53 lbs. of sound-deadening materials and increase window thickness. This will be the quietest CX-9 ever – possibly one of the quietest in the segment.

The CX-9’s cockpit is aimed squarely at the driver with spot-on ergonomics but the remainder of the passengers are not left to suffer. Controls are laid out in such a fashion so as to limit driver motions when working the HMI selector wheel for example. Fit and finish are up a few notches and the seats look very comfortable.

As always, the CX-9 features 3-row seating or an enormous trunk should you want to bring everything on your camping trip.

Under the bonnet is what’s unfamiliar. For the first time since the demise of the CX-7 and Mazdaspeed3, Mazda has reintroduced a turbocharged engine. This time, it’s the SKYACTIV-G 2.5L that gets boosted.

Output is rated at 250 horsepower at 5,000 rpm on 93-octane gasoline (227 horsepower on 87-octane gasoline) and a meaty 310 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission sends the power to the front or all four wheels.

Performance from the 2.5T is expected to be very good thanks to little to no lag and excellent throttle response thanks in no small part to 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) of boost pressure!
There are many other clever elements to the CX-9 including the BOSE audio system and countless active and passive safety systems.

Pricing has not yet been announced however we know we can expect the vehicles to show up in showrooms next spring.
