Achilles Mazda Tire Centre - Your One Stop Source for Tires

Where should you go when shopping for tires? Look no further than your Mazda dealership. The Mazda Tire Centre is your "One Stop Source for Tires" with top named brands like Goodyear, Dunlop, Pirelli, Michelin, BFGoodrich, Uniroyal, Bridgestone, Firestone, Yokohama and Toyo.

We believe that choosing the right tires for your Mazda vehicle is as easy as talking to a Mazda trained professional. We also believe that having some background information about tires and how they perform under different driving conditions will help you make your tire purchase decision easier.

We want to help you get the maximum performance from your purchase by showing you some simple maintenance that will help prevent premature wear or failure of your tires, will ensure optimum fuel economy and the benefit environment through reduced emissions.

Winter Tires

More and more, Canadian drivers are making the decision to install winter tires on their vehicles. While all season tires may get you through the winter they are no match for a tire designed exclusively for winter use. The tread on winter tires is specially designed for improved traction in snow and/or icy conditions as well as for the evacuation of water through the tread to help prevent hydroplaning on wet slushy roads. The specialized rubber and construction materials are also specially designed for improved starting, stopping and cornering in cold temperatures.

At 7 degrees Celsius an all season tire starts to lose its grip on dry surfaces and this trend continues as the temperature drops. At the same temperature a winter tire’s performance is significantly improved over that of an all season tire.

Winter tires are not just for driving on snowy, slushy roads they are designed especially for all winter driving conditions.

Winter tires are not recommended for use in late spring, summer or early fall as the rubber compound will wear very quickly if used when the projected daytime temperatures are 7 degrees Celsius or above.

Achilles Mazda offers steel wheel packages mounted with winter tires. Having winter tires mounted on steel wheels makes switching between seasons a breeze and helps prevent deterioration of your alloy wheels from salt, sand, stones, etc. used on winter roads and highways.

Tire Selection Tire Selection

Mazda engineers go to great lengths to design and test each and every component of your Mazda vehicle to provide the optimum driving comfort, safety, performance and handling. Tire selection is no exception. That’s why we recommend that you replace the tires on your vehicle with same tires used during production.

Also consider that with proper care and under optimum driving conditions the tires you purchase will last tens of thousands of kilometres. Making the wrong tire selection for your driving needs could result in an unfavourable driving experience over a period of several years.

  1. Wet/dry handling
  2. Winter driving
  3. Tread life
  4. Price

Regardless of your reasons, here are a few tips that must not be overlooked when considering your tire selection.

Tire Size

Your owner’s manual or the label usually found in the driver’s door opening and sometimes inside the glove box door will specify the correct size of tire for your vehicle.

Load and Speed Ratings

The load and speed rating can also be found in your owner’s manual or the label usually found in the driver’s door opening and sometimes inside the glove box door.

Often, discovering potential problems for your tires is as simple as giving them a good visual once-over. The next time you check your air pressure, scan your treads for stones or other material that might be stuck between the treads. These objects, if found, should be removed to prevent tread or tire damage. Also look for any sharp objects that may have punctured your tires. Even if the puncture is not deep enough to flatten the tires immediately, the cracking and pitting caused by smaller punctures can eventually worsen and lead to problems down the road

Foreign Objects and Punctures

Check the wear patterns on your treads as well. Excessive shoulder wear can indicate under-inflation, while wear to the center of the tread can mean over-inflation.

Tread Wear

Tread depth is typically measured in 1/32" increments. Many tires have tread wear indicator bars moulded into the tread. When the tread is worn down to where you can see a solid bar of rubber across the width of the tread, it is time to replace your tire.

A quick and easy method for you to check the tread depth yourself is with a Canadian penny. With the Queen side of the penny facing you, insert the penny into the tread Queen’s head first. A tire is worn out and should be replaced when the tread is no deeper than the top of the Queen’s crown. This is approximately 2/32". Repeat this by placing the coin into several treads across the tire from each side and the middle. Take the lowest reading as the overall tread depth.

Turn the penny over and place the maple leaves upside down into the tread. The top of the leaves is approximately 4/32" of tread depth. This is when you should start shopping for tires leaving yourself enough time to make the best choice of tire for your automobile.

Your tires can tell you a lot about the general condition of the tire and the automobile’s steering and suspension components. Any irregular wearing of the tread or uneven tread wear across the tire can be an indication of other problems with these components. Sometimes all that is necessary is a component adjustment or there could be components that are worn and need replacement. Your Mazda dealership will be happy to confirm which corrections are necessary.

Tire Rotation

The weight of a vehicle is not evenly distributed to all four tires. Therefore, regular rotation is necessary to maintain even tread wear and get the most out of your tires. Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s rotation recommendations.

The first rotation of your tires is the most important, and remember to adjust inflation pressures to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations after every rotation.

Tire Repairs

It is crucial to know when it is okay to have a tire repaired and when a tire should be replaced. If a tire loses its air pressure, it must be removed from the wheel for a complete internal inspection to be sure it is not damaged. Tires that are run even a short distance while flat are often damaged beyond repair. Most punctures, nail holes or cuts up to 1/4 inch can be repaired by trained technicians as long as the damage is confined to the tread. DO NOT repair tires with tread punctures larger than ¼ inch, or any sidewall puncture. Also, never repair tires which are worn below 1/16 inch of tread depth.

Most tire repairs should be handled by trained professionals. Quick-fix flat tire remedies are okay to get you to safety but, for the most part, your best bet is to keep a good spare tire in your trunk. Be sure that the spare is inflated to the proper pressure and looks to be in good shape. When any problems with your tires occur, head to the nearest Mazda dealership immediately for expert service from our trained technicians.
